MediaTek S900 8K TV chip volume production uses ultra-efficient 12nm process
MediaTek has announced its S900 - its flagship smart TV SoC - has entered volume manufacturing using TSMC’s 12FFC (12nm FinFET Compact) production process, making it The MediaTek S900 is the industry’s first 8K digital TV SoC produced using the highly efficient 12nm process. MediaTek is the world’s number one digital TV chipset provider, powering more than 90% of branded smart TVs globally.
The MediaTek S900 integrates advanced multimedia and edge-AI capabilities such as a proprietary AI processing unit (APU) that exclusively enables leading picture quality (AI PQ) and MediaTek's MiraVision Pro, which supports a variety of AI-enhanced features for smart TVs including real-time facial recognition and scene recognition that fundamentally improve picture quality by optimizing color saturation, brightness, sharpness and dynamic motion compensation.
The MediaTek S900 also enables televisions to serve as a control hub for a smart home (IoT) ecosystem. Since MediaTek also offers one of the widest ranges of smart home platforms, brands can use MediaTek’s NeuroPilot AI cross-development platform to enable control of smart devices in the living room, kitchen, bedroom and more through voice or gesture control for a revolutionary user interface experience.
TSMC’s ultra-low power 12FFC process leads the foundry segment’s 16/14/12nm generation technologies. It allows MediaTek to maximize new feature integration and high-performance heterogeneous processing elements within a tightly controlled power budget, which is essential for digital TV applications. It provides a sweet spot between performance and low power that is ideal for enabling voice recognition and edge AI capabilities in consumer electronics, wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
