    MediaTek Extends Reliability Gains from Wi-Fi 8 to Include Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6 Devices

    Wi-Fi 8 introduces significant advances in connection reliability; however, real-world networks rarely consist of devices from a single generation, Wi-Fi 8 / 7 / 6 that must coexist on the same infrastructure. So how can Wi-Fi 8 benefits be realized in networks that manage several generations, rather than only in Wi-Fi 8-exclusive environments?

    At MediaTek, we are addressing this challenge through a system-level approach that strengthens the broader Wi-Fi ecosystem. Our goal is to extend the advantages of Wi-Fi 8 across multi-generational deployments, ensuring that when a Wi-Fi 8 platform is used network operators and users see meaningful gains regardless of device mix.

    To achieve this, MediaTek Wi-Fi 8 platforms are built on four key technology pillars:

    DSO+ and NPCA+

    As Wi-Fi networks become increasingly generationally diverse, efficient coexistence of devices becomes essential.

    Dynamic Subband Operation plus (DSO+) and Non-Primary Channel Access plus (NPCA+) are coexistence-aware technologies designed to improve spectrum utilization and transmission efficiency. In mixed-generation device environments these mechanisms help maximize network performance even when Wi-Fi 8, Wi-Fi 7, and Wi-Fi 6 clients operate simultaneously. This enables more efficient use of shared wireless resources without requiring a every device to upgrade to get the most benefits.

    Xtra Range 2.0 and 3.0

    Wireless coverage remains one of the most critical user pain-points. Xtra Range 2.0 and 3.0 extend the effective communication range between access points and client devices across generations.

    These technologies help maintain reliable connectivity at the edge of network coverage in two important scenarios: Wi-Fi 8 access points communicating with legacy clients, and legacy access points serving Wi-Fi 8 devices. The result is more consistent coverage and improved user experience at the edge of network range.

    Mesh Boost 2.0

    Mesh networks have become a critical component of modern wireless deployments. For Wi-Fi 8 multi-device mesh products, Mesh Boost 2.0 enables BW320 operation in the 5 GHz band, significantly increasing backhaul capacity between mesh nodes. This delivers higher aggregate throughput while improving spectrum efficiency across the network.

    For large homes, enterprise campuses, and service provider deployments, this translates into stronger mesh performance and more efficient use of available spectrum.

    Zero-Wait DFS 3.0

    For Wi-Fi 8 router or gateway devices, Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) provides access to valuable spectrum but can introduce service interruptions when radar activity is detected. Zero-Wait DFS 3.0 minimizes these disruptions by reducing the impact of radar-triggered channel changes.

    The result is improved network stability and a more consistent user experience, particularly in environments where DFS channels are heavily utilized.

    The future of wireless networking will not be defined solely by the capabilities of the newest standard. It will also depend on how effectively different generations of devices work together.
