MediaTek & Google extend battery life with mobile game performance tuning

In the area of smartphone gaming, players have high expectations for a smooth gaming experience, which includes stable frame rates and excellent thermal management. In the past, game developers faced with the issue of unstable frame rates due to smartphone heating during gameplay often had to resort to lowering game fidelity or further optimizing renderers to cope. However, these methods often lacked flexibility and did not consider changes in real-time system status.

To address this issue, MediaTek is collaborating with Google to integrate the Android Dynamic Performance Framework (ADPF) and MediaTek's Adaptive Gaming Technology (MAGT), aiming to provide game studios with a more suitable solution for performance tuning.

The goal of this collaboration is to establish ADPF as a cross-device standard, while also providing an additional SDK for devices equipped with MediaTek's Dimensity chips to further enhance performance. The performance optimization and adaptive load control solutions provided by ADPF and MAGT can automatically adjust in-game visual quality and performance to maintain a consistent frame rate, adjusting according to real-time operating conditions and device status, thus solving the problem of unstable frame rates in smartphones during gaming due to heating.

Case Study: Ares: Rise of Guardians by KaKao Games

"Ares: Rise of Guardians" adopted the Android Dynamic Performance Framework (ADPF) to improve their game's performance and thermal management, to fully utilize graphic quality settings while avoiding thermal limits. MediaTek, drawing on its experience with MAGT, assisted Ares in optimizing the use of ADPF's Performance Hint Session API for performance tuning.

The results showed that tests on smartphones equipped with the Dimensity 9400 showed an 17% reduction in average frame rate jitter and a 6% reduction in power consumption, thus providing users with a better gaming experience and longer battery life.

game setup average fps STD peak power draw
    ADPF on 30.0 0.77 872mA
    ADPF off 29.97 0.93 923mA
    ADPF advantage - -17% -6% (51mA)

Test settings: ARES 1.59.1, Highest Quality, 30FPS, 30 mins, MediaTek Dimensity 9400, intial AP temperature 35 °C, peak (skin) temperature limit 48°C.

This collaboration showcases a standardized performance tuning solution across devices. Through the cooperation of ADPF and MAGT, developers can better balance performance, heat, and fidelity, providing the best experience for Android game players. In the future, as ADPF continues to be upgraded and MAGT further develops, this collaboration will bring greater benefits to more Android users, while Dimensity users will continue to enjoy the additional features provided by MAGT. This innovative adaptive performance solution sets a new standard for the future development of mobile gaming, demonstrating how technological advancements can bring users a more immersive and satisfying gaming experience.
